Interview Hints and Tips

Interviews are stressful, but they don't have to be. With the right preparation and frame of mind, you'll have a chance to shine.

Dress appropriately

Dress accordingly, most employers will expect you to be smart and wear a suit.

Plan ahead

Try and find out the format of the interview before the day, make clear travel plans and allow plenty of time for travel.

Research the company

Find out as much as you can about the organisation, not just looking at the website, to help you add some detail to your answers. This is your chance to impress your interviewer with your keen interest and understanding of their organisation and the competitor market.

Things to consider are:

  • Do you understand the environment the company and their clients work in?
  • Are you aware of how the organisation is currently performing?
  • Look at newspapers, the Financial Times, magazines and the internet for information - don't just rely on information from their website
  • Keep up-to-date with key issues in the market place

Prepare your answers

Interviews are built around three basic questions - think about broad answers to these questions beforehand:

  • What interests you about this job?
  • Why are you applying to us?

Remember to re-read your application prior to your interview.

Rehearse

However confident you are, it’s worth practising your answers to formal interview questions, in a formal setting. Ask your careers service if they offer interview practice, if not you could ask friends.

Expand on your answers

Always expand on your answer, ‘Yes’ and ‘No” don’t tell the interviewer anything. Most interview questions will be “open” questions leaving you room for detail and expansion.

Answer the question you’ve been asked – don’t ramble on about everything you know.

Don't rush your answers

Take a little time to think about your response. Ask the interviewer to clarify anything you don’t understand and speak clearly and concisely.

Prepare questions to ask the interviewer

It is just as important to make sure the oranisation is right for you. Prepare some questions to ask your interviewer as this shows an interest in the organisation and a keen attitude.

Sell yourself

Be positive, enthusiastic and natural. Make sure the interviewers see the best of you.

Body language

Employers will read your body language so try to stay as relaxed as possible. Portray yourself as somebody who is open, confident, ready and willing to take on information. Maintain eye contact as it proves you’re interested and shows you’re taking in what is said.
